OKLAHOMA CITY–Eisenhower’s No. 1 doubles team of Josh and Jacob Phelps came ever so close to a state tennis championship but eventually were edged out but still came away with silver medals.

The pair wound up facing Hunter Henry and Aiden Robinson of Tulsa Cascia Hall in the title match in Class 5A and after losing the first set, 6-2, the brothers played the eventual champs to a 6-4 set as the Ike duo did their best in making it tight.

The runner-up finish was the highest level attained by a Lawton tennis player or doubles team in recent history at the state meet.

The Phelps brothers also had a tough semifinal match Saturday, pulling out a 6-4, 7-6 victory over Crossings Christian’s Clark-Dillon.

Earlier the Phelps brothers coasted in the first round winning 6-0, 6-0 against Ardmore and then beating Carl Albert, 6-0, 6-2.

The seniors had been splitting up at times but opted to team up in their final season of prep tennis.

Ike’s No. 2 doubles team of Ben Bear and Jake Eschler earned third by beating McGuinness, 6-4, 7-6, in another big effort by the Eagles.

Eisenhower also earned a fourth-place finish from James Lopez at No. 2 singles.
