Memorial service for Rebecca McKeown will be 10 a.m. Thursday, November 30, 2017 in St. Paul's United Methodist Church with Rev. Lisa Beavers, Pastor officiating.
Interment will follow in Sunset Memorial Gardens under direction of Becker-Rabon Funeral Home.
Rebecca McKeown passed away on November 24, 2017 in Oklahoma City. Rebecca was born April 4, 1937, in Wayne, the daughter of William S. and Ila Rebekah (Mitchell) Lackey.
Rebecca and Loren McKeown were united in marriage April 5, 1958. Loren, her much-loved husband, preceded her in death on November 23, 2017.
Rebecca attended Wayne Public Schools, graduating as valedictorian in May 1955. She attended the University of Oklahoma on a Regents Scholarship for one year. She graduated from Oklahoma State University in 1969 with a degree in elementary education. In 1979 she graduated from the University of Oklahoma with a master's degree in elementary education, with additional hours in elementary administration.
Rebecca's first teaching position was in Ponca City, Oklahoma, for one year, followed by two years teaching at Peru Elementary School in Peru, Nebraska, five years at Woodland Hills Elementary in Lawton, two years as assistant principal at Douglass Learning Center, five years as principal at Lincoln Elementary School, and fifteen years at Hugh Bish Elementary School. Hugh Bish School was named a National Blue Ribbon School in 1992. The credit for that honor was shared with the wonderful students, dedicated staff, and parents who cared deeply about education.
Rebecca was a member of St. Paul's United Methodist Church where she served on various committees. Her community activities included membership in Chapter EB of P.E.O., Lawton Book and Play Review Club, the Mayor's Commission on the Status of Women, and First Thursday Friends. After retirement she was a volunteer for American Cancer Society's Reach to Recovery program where she worked with breast cancer patients. As a cancer survivor herself, this experience was of great significance to her as she gained strength from patients she counseled.
Rebecca was preceded in death by her parents.
Survivors include, a daughter, Nancy and her husband Dale of Cushing; three sons: Mike and wife Luciana of Marble Falls, Texas; Tom of Mustang; David and wife Tracy of Yukon; and daughter-in-law Patricia of Mustang. She is also survived by a sister and brother-in-law Shelba and Del McGowen of Norman; a brother and sister-in-law William and Myls Lackey of Las Vegas; nine grandchildren: Sarah Dowell, Emily Dowell Love and husband Eric, Susan Dowell, Samuel McKeown and wife Jordynn, Sara Kelley, Chelsea McKeown Timmons and husband Chris, Grace McKeown, Daniel McKeown, and Ana McKeown, and nine great grandchildren.
