Jerry Bruce Avery

WALTERS  Graveside funeral service for Jerry Bruce Avery, 65, Lawton, will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, April 17, 2018, in Walters Cemetery with the Rev. Brandon Johnson, Pastor, First Christian Church. officiating.

Mr. Avery died Tuesday, April 10, 2018, in Lawton.

Arrangements under direction of Becker-Rabon Funeral Home.

Jerry Bruce Avery was born March 31, 1953, in Thomas, to Charles Elmo and Onsby Faye (Briggs) Avery. He grew up in Walters, and was a graduate of Walters High School. He later attended Oklahoma State University. He had been a member of the Boy Scouts of American and earned the rank of Eagle Scout. He was honored with the "God and Country Award".

Jerry served in the Navy aboard a submarine. He later worked for his mother and step-father, John E. Ryder at Lawton Insurance Agency. Jerry married Kay Ryder and together they raised Afghan dogs. The couple later divorced.  

He is survived by his former spouse, Kay Avery, Lawton; sister-in-law, Sue Avery, Cement; uncle, Glenn Briggs, Martha; aunt, Burna Cole, McCoy, Texas; and numerous cousins.

His parents, his step-father, brother, Gary Don Avery, uncles, Troy Briggs, Roy Briggs, Harry Briggs, Jr. and Vybert Briggs and aunts, Marie Baker, Helen Schultz and Barbara Cole, preceded him in death.
