Hazel Marie Helms
Hazel Marie Helms passed from this life on Wednesday, Nov. 15, 2017, in Cape Coral, Fla., where she resided with son Rick Helms and his wife Claudia and her granddaughter Margaret.
Funeral will be at noon Saturday, Dec. 2, 2017, at First Baptist Church, Chattanooga.
Hazel was the daughter of Albert and Lavell Harper. She was born in Chattanooga on June 30, 1934. She grew up in Chattanooga, playing girls' basketball and softball, lettering four years. She was Senior High Carnival Queen and also Basketball Attendant. Hazel was a Pep Club leader in senior high, enjoyed singing in girls glee club and Chatty First Baptist Church Choir. She was part of the "Chatty Chat" newspaper staff. Hazel graduated from Chattanooga High School in 1952 and attended Cameron Junior College. She received an Intramural Basketball medal in 1953 at Cameron.
Hazel met Eugene "Gene" Helms while both were employed by Spartan Aircraft. They were married Feb. 25, 1955. Hazel worked as an administrative assistant for the United Way for 14 years. In 1980, she became bookkeeper for Gene at Helms Conoco Service. She added her own HH Designs Clothing business to his shop before they both retired in 1996.
Hazel was active in Camp Fire Girls and later a leader of her own group. She was a member of Southwest Oklahoma Genealogical Society and served as a membership chairperson. Hazel was a member of Chattanooga First Baptist Church and previously Central Baptist Church in Lawton.
Cherishing her memory are her survivors, son, Rick Helms and wife Claudia, of Cape Coral, Fla.; daughter, Sherri Hurst and husband David of Bristow; grandchildren: Christopher Sasser, Chad Sasser and wife Carrie of Bristow, and Margaret Helms of Cape Coral; two great-grandchildren: Carsten and Caleigh Sasser; sister, Cleo Picard and husband Chuck; brother, Bill Harper and wife Linda; sisters-in-law: Wanda Helms and Winnie Glover, along with numerous nieces and nephews.
Hazel was preceded in death by her husband, Gene Helms; parents; her brother, A.D. Harper; brothers-in-law: Tommy Glover and EJ Helms; and nephew and niece: Ronald and Susan Helms.
