The state Medical Examiner has identified a woman found dead Jan. 6 outside a downtown Lawton church.

Sandra Kay Huffman-Holt, 69, was found lying on the ground behind some bushes outside First Baptist Church Chapel, Southwest 5th Street and B Avenue, according to Amy Elliott, spokesperson for the Medical Examiner. The cause of death is still under investigation.

Lawton police are awaiting the determination while continuing to investigate the circumstances that led to Huffman-Holt’s death.

Police were called around 9 a.m. Jan. 6 to the chapel area of the church on the report of an unattended death.

Sgt. Tim Jenkins, LPD information officer, has said a person walking by noticed the woman lying on the ground near the church and called 911. Officers arrived to find the woman dead.

Jenkins said the woman may have been homeless. Property found near the woman appeared to be hers.

Overnight temperatures before her discovery were in the 20s.
