ANADARKO — A 29-year-old Anadarko school custodian is free on $25,000 bond after he was accused of sexual contact with a 14-year-old girl after plying her with alcohol and marijuana.

The girl told investigators that she didn’t tell anyone sooner about the May 2019 incident because she “felt as if it was her fault.”

Richard Dayton Pewenofkit made his initial appearance Wednesday in Caddo County District Court where he was charged with felony counts of rape by instrumentation and forcible sodomy, as well as a misdemeanor count of contributing to the delinquency of a minor, court records indicate. He faces up to 15 years in prison for the rape count and up to 20 years for the sodomy charge, if convicted.

Pewenofkit appeared on law enforcement radar after the girl, her grandmother and her boyfriend and his mother came to the Anadarko Police Department on Monday. She spoke with Lt. Dustan Chandler.

The girl said that on May 18, 2019, she’d just gone through a bad breakup with a boyfriend, “was very depressed and just wanted to get away,” the affidavit states. She said she went to her friend’s house to stay the night. Pewenofkit also lived in that home.

While there, she said Pewenofkit asked her if she wanted to smoke pot with him. She agreed and they went outside and smoked. Once inside, they drank two bottles of alcohol together. At one point, she said, Pewenofkit was on the floor and when she tried to help him up, she fell on top of him.

According to the affidavit, Pewenofkit started asking the girl about what she and her ex-boyfriend did together; that’s when she noticed he was becoming excited. She said he pulled his pants down and gestured for her to perform a sexual act. Afterwards, she said she went upstairs to get away from him but he followed her and they drank more alcohol.

The girl said the drink began to kick in and, at some point, she mistook Pewenofkit for her ex-boyfriend. That’s when he put his hand down her pants and touched her inappropriately, according to the affidavit. She said she didn’t remember anything else because she believes she passed out.

“I asked her why she hasn’t come forward before now and she stated that she was afraid her mom, her family and her friend would all be mad at her,” Chandler said. “She said that she also felt as if it was her fault.”

The girl said that a few days before talking with police, she’d felt comfortable enough with her current boyfriend and he told his mother, the affidavit states. She said she didn’t feel safe going back to school because Pewenofkit is one of the custodians. She got a protective order from the court.

Pewenofkit spoke with police on Tuesday. He first denied any sexual contact with the girl but admitted to drinking and smoking marijuana with her while at the home. He said he “was high and was drunk” and he guessed he could have made the girl perform a sexual act, the affidavit states. He also said the girl wanted him to put his hand down her pants and that she gave him oral sex more than once that night. He was arrested.

Pewenofkit is scheduled to return to court at 9 a.m. Feb. 20 for his preliminary hearing conference, records indicate. The protective order remains in place.
