Lawton police continue to seek information into the Monday morning death and the identity of a woman found near a downtown church.

“In reference to this case we are still investigating whether there is foul play or not,” said Sgt. Tim Jenkins, Lawton Police information officer. “We do not have any identity information at this time. It is an unknown female and cause of death is undetermined at this time.”

Police were called around 9 a.m. Monday to the area of Southwest 5th Street and Southwest B Avenue on the report of an unattended death near the First Baptist Church Chapel.

Jenkins said a person walking by noticed the woman lying on the ground near the church and called 911. Officers arrived to find the woman dead. It’s unclear what caused her death. He said the woman may have been homeless. Property found near the woman appeared to be hers.

With overnight Sunday temperatures in the 20s, Jenkins said there’s the possibility she died from exposure.

The state Medical Examiner’s office was called and the woman’s body was transported to Oklahoma City for autopsy and possible identification.

Jenkins asked that if you have any information regarding this incident or the woman’s identity to call Lawton Police or Crime Stoppers at (580) 355-INFO.
