City of Lawton officials said a team of seven, consisting of six rescue technicians and one battalion chief, left Lawton at 5 a.m. Monday and is expected to arrive in Florida early Tuesday.
Their mission, anticipated to last between seven and 14 days, will focus on providing critical support to communities impacted by the storm, fire officials said. The Lawton team is joining forces with crews from Guymon and Coalgate to assist in the effort. The teams are responding to a request from the Florida Division of Emergency Management for a Type I Swiftwater Search and Rescue (SAR) team. That team is comprised of 16 personnel equipped with four watercraft capable of supporting mission needs to include search, rescue and recovery operations for humans and animals in swiftwater and swiftwater/flood environments, fire officials said.
“Our priority is to ensure the safety and well-being of those in affected areas, and we’re prepared to respond swiftly to any emergencies that arise,” said Lawton Fire Chief Jared Williams. “Our team is trained and equipped to handle the challenges that come with floodwaters, and we’re committed to providing the support needed to keep communities safe.”
City Council members are expected to approve the decision today made by the city manager and mayor to authorize deployment of personnel and equipment.
