WWI focus of CIVA Veterans Day celebration
As the Comanche Indian Veterans Association (CIVA) readies to honor its veterans, this year’s remembrance and honors will be to those who served in World War I a century later.
The 42nd Annual Veterans Day celebration and powwow will be from 2-10 p.m. Sunday at Watchetaker Hall, Comanche Nation Tribal Complex, 9 miles north of Lawton. This year’s special guests will be direct descendants of Numunu who served in the “first great war.”
CIVA Historian Lanny Asepermy reminds that World War I began on July 28, 1944, however the United States didn’t declare war on Germany until April 6, 1918. By the time Armistice was signed on Nov. 11, 1918, ending the conflict.
