Veterans honored at Lawton-Fort Sill Veterans Center celebration
When Command Sgt. Maj. Anthony Williams took the podium Friday at the Lawton-Fort Sill Veterans Center, he controlled the attention of dozens of World War II, Korea and Vietnam War veterans.
Each resident in attendance — veterans many of the country’s conflicts over the last 75 years — gave Williams their utmost attention and respect. But it wasn’t about him, Williams told the crowd. Veteran’s Day, the day they were all gathered to recognize, wasn’t about the speaker. It was about the men in the audience — the residents who, in their prime, wore the uniform of the U.S. armed forces and fought for their country.
“Today is really not about me,” Williams said. “It’s not about a lot of us. Today...we’ll honor and salute millions of veterans across the country for their service to the nation.”
