Ihler leaves city government after 26 years
When Jerry Ihler started his municipal career, he was one member of a staff of city engineers sharing a common office in what had been a classroom in a school converted to government use.
When Ihler ended his career Friday, he was still in a classroom in a school converted to government use, but this time he had the office to himself and he was running the place.
It was an eventful journey from a city engineer, to “the” city engineer, to Public Works director to Lawton city manager. And, it all began because he came to Lawton in 1982 to visit his brother Ron, then a coach at Cameron University. Ihler and his wife Jini were considering a career change, Ron liked Lawton and the City of Lawton just happened to be advertising for a city engineer.
