DA opponents explain positions, trade barbs

Comanche County candidates for district attorney answered questions about the job and traded barbs Thursday during a candidate forum that also gave voters a final look at candidates for state office before Tuesday’s general election.

Current District Attorney Fred Smith and former District Attorney Dick Tannery participated in the forum via six questions posed by Cameron University associate professor Wendy Whitman Cobb. While the process was polite, the two did exchange barbs during closing arguments and during some questions, touching on Tannery’s contention that Smith doesn’t prosecute cases and Smith’s challenge to voters “fact check” claims by both men before making a decision.
