Candidate visits help Elgin Middle students become informed citizens

ELGIN — They may not be old enough to vote, but the 40 students of Melissa Evon’s civics class at Elgin Middle School are well aware of the issues facing this state and country and the candidates that will soon be elected to address them.

Evon, a longtime geography teacher, approached her principal about creating a civics elective class for the new school year. With merely a copy of the Constitution and decades worth of electoral knowledge, she was given the approval to create the class — one dedicated not just to the study of the American government, but also the midterm elections.
