Vrska picks LHS, Mac in key loop grid battles
Welcome to the 2014 high school football season, football fans. As always we're gonna start this year's edition of the picks with the traditional Week 1 matchup of Lawton High and Eisenhower.
Wait What's that? Eisenhower and Lawton High aren't playing each other in Week 1? It's actually Week 7 right now?
Let us get this straight, the Royals are one game away from the World Series, the Dallas Cowboys are on a five-game winning streak and among the discussion for best team in the NFL and LHS-Ike isn't Week 1. What is going on here? The Mayans said the apocalypse was supposed to happen in 2012 not 2014.
We're so confused that we're just gonna take your word for it, so yes the Wolverines and Eagles play each other this week. It's the first time since 1993 that two rivals haven't played each other in Week 1. It's also the first time they've be district foes since 1977 (hat tip to Herb Jacobs for that stat).
Lawton High has been rolling since its Week 2 loss to MacArthur. The Wolverines can put up a lot of points in a hurry.
Unfortunately for Eagles fans, their team allowed 33 or more points in four of six games this season. That's the difference: Ike cannot stop the LHS offense Lawton High 42, EISENHOWER 20.
Let's get to the rest of the Fall Break games which are happening tonight except for one puzzlingly being played tomorrow. The home teams are in all caps.
MacArthur 31, ARDMORE 24 This game is for the District 5A-1 title. No. 2 MacArthur is currently behind Ardmore in the standings thanks to a two-point win over Altus a couple weeks ago. No. 3 Ardmore has won all of its district games by at least 15 points. Last season, Ardmore got Mac at home for the district title and lost thanks to a gutsy fake punt run on fourth down by Will Collins. Both teams are better overall this year, but Mac's linemen win this game.
ALTUS 40, Chickasha 14 Altus continues to prove us correct. The Bulldogs won at Del City last week and are clearly a Top 3 team in the district and it gets Ardmore at home next week. This is the last week to buy low on Altus. Chickasha got its only district win last week against Northwest Classen.
DUNCAN 21, El Reno 7 It's been a tough first year in the district for El Reno with its only win this season coming against Classen. Duncan's only win is against Chickasha. Duncan's win is better and the Demons are home.
