The story lines for an early season
As district play gets in full swing, here are (more than) a few early story lines to keep an eye on.
District 5A-1:Duncan and Altus could both make the playoffs.
Altus' T.J. McGill and Hunter Cleveland were a great 1-2 punch against Class 4A No. 1 Anadarko, until the offense hit a stall. When the Bulldogs ran Jeremy Reed's offense fluidly, even Anadarko needed time to adjust. Altus rebounded with a close win against Elk City, then routed El Reno last week to reach its first 3-1 start since 2001.
Duncan got inspired play from senior quarterback Mason Hightower (two touchdowns) in a 14-13 loss to fifth-ranked Carl Albert two weeks ago. Not a bad loss considering the Demons brought along two young kickers and new schemes on both sides of the ball, while starting against three top-five ranked teams. Duncan rebounded by forcing five turnovers in a 34-13 win at Chickasha last week.
If either team slips, circle Oct. 31 when Altus travels to Duncan for what could decide the final playoff spot.
