Rollergirls top Tulsa squad
Lawton's 580 Rollergirls came in first Saturday night in the "running of the babes" after beating the Roughneck Roller Derby squad at home.
The Rollergirls brought home the 143-139 win before a good sized audience at the Great Plains Coliseum. The bout with the Tulsa team would live up to its billing as the tough defensive battle was marked by explosions of points being racked up on both sides.
"They came to play," said Erin "Dublin D'Pain" Cooper, 580 media officer.
The Rollergirls took a one-point lead with the first jam and by jam eight, built a 23-5 lead that grew to 68-34 by the 15th jam. A couple of explosive bursts by the Roughneck's closed the gap to 72-67. A run of penalties put the 580 jammers in the box and allowed Tulsa's team to take the lead at halftime, 85-81. .
A "riveting, edge of your seat" second half followed. with the 580 gaining on the rivals and regaining a 100-99 lead they continued to add to, Cooper said.
