National Running Day event comes to Lawton

To runners, the first Wednesday in June is special.

Since 2009 it's been reserved as National Running Day as part of a National Initiative, and for the first time, Lawton is recognized as a national hosting site for an event.

Sponsored by the Lawton branch of Oklahoma City-based Runhers Women's Club, today's run is the first of its kind in Lawton and is set to begin tonight at 6 at Elmer Thomas Park. Participants will make one lap around the park.

"This day and our organization is really about encouraging and recognizing living an active lifestyle," event coordinator Carol Gardner said. "We're excited about bringing this to Lawton."

She conservatively estimates 50 people will take part in the walk, run or jog event that is free of charge. Those interested in participating are invited to meet around 5:45 at the Holiday House off Ferris near Elmer Thomas.

"There seems to be an overriding theme," Gardner said. "Everyone runs for something, whatever that goal is."
