McElroy gets awaited call from Braves
A call that Codey McElroy had waited on his entire life finally came on Saturday.
The Chattanooga native and Cameron star was selected by the Atlanta Braves in the 19th round with the 583rd pick in the 2014 Major League Draft.
McElroy took the call from the Braves representative with his parents, Joe and Charmin and his sister, Courtney at his family's home in Perkins.
"It was awesome. They called and asked if I had heard the news," McElroy said. "I said, 'not yet' and that's when he let me know they had just drafted me. We were all pretty excited. I think my family was excited as I was."
The next step in the process, he says, in the next few days, is to meet with Atlanta's area scout that drafted him to discuss a signing bonus.
"Right now, the plan is definitely to sign and get going," he said. "I don't see any reason to wait."
Once McElroy signs, he'll be assigned to Rookie ball in Virginia with the Danville Braves and start his professional career later this summer.
In his only season at CU, the 6-foot-6 shortstop led Cameron in home runs, RBIs, on-base percentage and extra-base hits.
