Macias Madness

Ike’s title game hopes dashed at buzzer, 40-39

TULSA — The defensive scheme was simple in its design.

With only 2.3 seconds remaining and El Reno needing to go the length of the court, Eisenhower coach Daniel Wall implemented a full-court man-to-man press to keep the Lady Indians from making an easy catch on the inbounds pass.

Something went terribly wrong, though.

Merzedes Macias snuck behind the defense into open space, corralling the ball just beyond halfcourt. Mikaela Hall was the only line of defense at that point, but Charlee Bushyhead blocked her path with a well-timed screen.

Macias took three dribbles, hop stepped and released a 3-pointer from the right wing just before the buzzer.

The shot served as the game-winner, sending No. 10 El Reno to the Class 5A state championship game with a 40-39 win over Ike inside the Mabee Center at Oral Roberts University in Tulsa on Friday.

The Lady Indians will play No. 2 Piedmont for the Class 5A crown today at 6 p.m. in the Mabee Center.
