MACARTHUR NOTEBOOK/Week 2
Chalk one up for the MacArthur defense which totally dominated Clinton last week in the season opener, paving the way to an impressive 43-6 victory over the No. 2 team in Class 4A.
"I was really happy with the effort and intensity," Mac coach Brett Manning said. "The rain was really coming down there in the first quarter but the guys blocked out all those outside forces and just lined up and played good, sound football.
"Now, we did make some first-game mistakes, but those are all things that are correctable and in most cases we've already discussed them and made corrections where we need to make them."
Mac limited Clinton to just six first downs two by penalty and 148 yards total offense, more than 100 yards of that coming in the first half. The Red Tornadoes were just 2 of 10 passing for 31 yards and their All-State candidate at running back, Marquiz Simpkins, needed 28 tough carries to get 86 yards.
"We did a good job on Simpkins; the guys ran to the football and didn't let him break tackles and get yards after contact," Manning said. "I was really happy with the way we flew around on defense. We wrapped up and showed some that we were pretty strong fundamentally."
On offense Mac had great balance with 178 yards rushing on 32 carries, an average of 5.5 per attempt. In the air Mac quarterback Will Collins hit 15 of 25 passes for 213 yards. He had one interception.
"Overall, Will did a good job executing the offense and making good decisions," the coach said. "He got good protection and made some good reads on several plays. On the interception, it was just a great play by Simpkins. Most high school defensive backs couldn't have made that play but he just read it right and was able to match the catch. Other than that we didn't have any other turnovers and we only had a few penalties (7 for 59)."
Running back Davon Finkley rushed 18 times for 129 yards and a touchdown and Jacques Henderson ran 29 yards for another Mac rushing TD. Lorenzo West, Jace Cummings and Jarviear Christon all caught scoring passes from Collins.
