Mac launches district slate at home tonight
When you have a team loaded with smart football players, it's hard to try and pull the wool over their eyes and you sure won't find that happening at MacArthur as the Highlanders prepare for their District 5A-1 opener against Northwest Classen.
Kickoff in the district opener is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Cameron Stadium.
The Highlanders come in with a 3-0 record and the No. 4 ranking in Class 5A. Meanwhile Northwest Classen is 1-2 with the lone win coming against Northeast Academy. In the two losses Northwest was beaten by a combined score of 106-20.
The Mac players have seen video of those games and there is no need in Coach Brett Manning trying to stretch the truth.
"Our players know that we have the edge in talent and they understand what's at stake," Manning said. "We've cut back on practice time this week to give them a little break after three tough games, but we still expect them to practice hard when we're out there and get the things corrected that we need to address.
"But, you can't fool these kids. They know that if we go out there Thursday and play like we've been playing that everything will take care of itself.
"I've told them that we want them to go out and execute the offense and not get sloppy. We want to avoid penalties and also want to improve our kickoff coverage. That's one phase we need to improve on each week."
