Looking back on great school seasons
End of the line.
With state tournaments and all-star games a thing of the recent past, we're attempting today to tie up the last 10 months of area high school sports.
Today we'll recap the highlights from the fall season. Winter and spring take the stage Friday.
Hollis finds glory: The Tigers clinched their first-ever football state title with a 29-12 win over Ringling in the Class A state finals at Cache on Dec. 19, of all dates.
Hollis' first state title was the best kind undefeated, 14-0. There were heroics. Starting quarterback Khalil Johnson went down with an injury in district play, but sophomore Gunnar Ewing was solid in replacing him the remainder of the season. Senior fullback Carlos Herrera was a steady cog all season, eventually helping snare the state title that he wanted so badly after his father, Mario, died of a heart attack in 2012.
