LHS hoops teams prepare to host Del City
Before they can focus on the looming rivalry game on Friday, the Lawton High School basketball teams must first face a difficult challenge tonight when the Del City Eagles come to town.
And although the DC boys and girls teams have just one win on the season between them, the Lawton High coaches are not taking the games lightly, because of the stiff competition the Eagles have played thus far.
On the boys' side, Del City is ranked No. 11 in Class 5A, despite being 0-3. To their credit, two of the losses came to 6A schools, including 6A No. 4 Midwest City, and the other came to 5A No. 4 Eisenhower.
Lawton High shares two common opponents with their Big 10 Conference rivals from Del City, as the Wolverines were also beaten soundly by Midwest City and Choctaw. But fresh off their first-place finish in the Southern Oklahoma Invitational this weekend, the Wolverines are 3-2, have cracked the Top 20 rankings and are brimming with confidence. Coach Eric Wiley said he wants his team to play with a sense of belief, but also does not want them to get too ahead of themselves.
"We win on Saturday and we enjoyed the win," Wiley said. "Now we get back to work and concentrate on Del City and ride that high until the next game."
