Lawton High NoteBook / Week 7
Another new district foe
The Wolverines have faced a couple of new district opponents this season in Enid and Stillwater thanks to Class 6A being split in two. This week marks the third new district opponent of the season, but its Lawton High's oldest and most bitter rival: Eisenhower
For the first time since the old Boomer Conference folded after the 1977 season, the LHS-Ike game will be for more than just bragging rights. LHS head coach Randy Breeze isn't too enthused.
"I don't like it as well because there was so much anticipation and excitement (when it was) Game 1," Breeze said. "Everybody starting off thinking they have a real good football team and this is going to be a great year, but now that the season has started there's a little bit less excitment."
The last time these two schools didn't play each other in Week 1 was 1993. That year, LHS beat South Garland (Tex.) High School, 13-7 and Eisenhower beat MacArthur, 46-12. The Wolverines and Eagles played in Week 2 with Ike winning, 24-0.
"I didn't like it when it moved to Game 1, but after playing it as Game 1 all those years, I got to where I did like it, so I might just be that person that doesn't like change," Breeze said. "I wish it was still Game 1."
