Late hits save Owls
ELGIN No senior likes losing the last home game of their career.
Elgin's upperclassmen avoided that scenario Monday, coming back from two deficits in a 10-9 win over Class 2A No. 10 Rush Springs.
The Class 4A No. 20 Owls strung together four runs with two outs in the bottom of the sixth inning to overcome a 9-6 hole on a pair of two-run singles from Austin Bartosovsky and Cooper Wilson.
"Those hits were big. (Losing on senior night) is something you remember forever, so you definitely want to win," senior Zane Rulon, who went 3 for 3 and recorded the save after pitching the top half of the seventh.
Rulon got the game's final out by retiring Rush Springs' Holden Nichols, who blasted an opposite-field solo home run in the second inning.
"The one he hit out was up in the zone, I just tried to keep the ball down," Rulon said. "I got a fastball low and he hit it into the dirt and it came straight to me. It worked out."
