Ike, Elgin both to host volleyball regionals
That gasp of air blowing across Southwest Oklahoma came from the volleyball players, coaches and fans at Eisenhower and Elgin because instead of having to both play in the same Class 5A regional, they were split up, giving both a chance to reach the state tournament.
And, to make things even better for the two schools, they each were assigned to host a regional tournament, something that few coaches expected to happen.
"We (Ike and Elgin) were both hoping that we had done enough to both warrant hosting regionals and fortunately the OSSAA saw it that way too," Ike coach Becky Martin said. "When the word started reaching our students you could just hear the excitement in the halls as more and more students, kids who probably never have been to a match are telling me how excited they are and that they're coming to watch us Tuesday.
"I talked to Mr. Moore (Lawton Athletic Director Mike) we are the first Lawton team to host a volleyball regional so hopefully our fans will come out and support our players. To have this type of season takes a lot of hard work and dedication and these kids deserve to play before a big crowd."
At Eisenhower the top-seeded Eagles (24-6) will take on El Reno (2-17) at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday afternoon, then Oklahoma City Southeast (23-5) will tangle with Noble (13-11) around 6 p.m. The two winners meet at about 7:30 p.m. for a berth in the state tournament.
Tuesday the first game at Elgin (20-12) will match the top-seeded Owls against MacArthur (8-14) at 4:30 p.m., then Carl Albert (13-17) will battle Chickasha (13-15) at 6 p.m. The two winners will tangle around 7:30 p.m. for the title and a berth in the state meet.
