Former CU softball coach new head coach at North Texas
Rodney DeLong's journey as a softball coach took him to the east coast for a year, then to Nashville for a year but now the Lawton native is back closer to home after being named the new head softball coach at the University of North Texas in Denton.
The hiring was announced by Vice President and Director of Athletics Wren Baker who said DeLong was their man all along.
"I am excited to welcome Coach DeLong and his family into the North Texas family," Baker said. "Rodney is a rising star among college softball coaches and possesses the qualities the search committee desired when we began our search. He has had success with different programs at multiple levels. He's a proven coach, but more importantly for us, he has demonstrated the ability to help young people grow and develop. Coach DeLong will be an asset to this campus and community."
DeLong spent the past season as the head coach at Austin Peay and what he did to turn that program around with a 22-win improvement left him as a popular candidate for just about any athletic director needing a softball coach. North Texas just got to that point faster than several others that had expressed an interest in the Lawton native.
