Football is just around the corner
High school football practice starts on Monday, August 11.
Where did the summer go?
Many fans have surely been looking forward to gridiron action and they're about to get their wish. With three weeks left until practice starts, it's time to catch up with all three Lawton programs.
Players will soon be starting practice, but for those who missed the Lawton Public Schools session in May, they will have to get the their own physicals before they can practice or play in scrimmages or games.
First, football players who need a physical should go to their respective principal's office and pick up the forms needed, including the OSSAA physical form that must be filled out and signed by a parent before they can even got get their physical. They can then go to their own private physician or to another medical facility such as the AM-PM Clinic ($15 fee) to get a physical.
The Wolverines had their normal late-June camp and they're looking to replace at least nine starters across the offense and defense.
Gone are All-State running back Mike Warren and quarterback Dallas Sealey. Seniors Darreyl Patterson and Jack Meservy are expected to replace them, but head coach Randy Breeze is mostly excited about the turn out LHS had.
"Camp went real, real well. We're progressing at the right speed. We're averaging 90 kids per day. Right now, we're doing one hour of lifting and one hour of agility. It's been a realy good summer."
That number of kids could possibly increase with a dozen or so move-ins LHS gets each year, but Breeze expects the number won't dip below 90.
Which is probably a good thing since the Wolverines may have to scrimmage themselves on August 21. Lawton High has had trouble finding a school to come down to Lawton, so if push comes to shove, there will be a Red-White game.
