Elgin, Mac volleyball clash kicks off Owl's regional tournament
ELGIN Elgin volleyball head coach Brittain Meyer didn't need any introduction to her team's first-round regional opponent today.
Meyer's fifth-ranked Owls play against her alma mater MacArthur at 1:30 p.m. at Elgin. Meyer graduated from Mac in 2007 and was part of the school's last state tournament team in 2006.
"We haven't played Mac since I've been here (two years)," Meyer said. "But the funny thing is some of those girls starting I used to coach at MacArthur Middle School. I told my players they have a couple girls to watch out for."
Among other Highlanders, the Owls (20-12) have been preparing for Mac's strongest server, Lillian Phillips.
"I know she has the potential to get back there with her serve and serve 25 in a row, because it's very strong," Meyer said. "We're working on serve-receive because we can't let her run away from us."
Elgin has won eight of its last nine matches, the lone setback coming to Class 4A No. 1 Mt. St. Mary's to close the regular season.
