East slugs West in All-State golf
CATOOSA It was a bad start to Oklahoma Coaches Association All-State week for the West participants as they were pummeled in golf.
The East boys won, 15.5-8.5, and the East girls won, 17.5-6.5 at Cherokee Hills Golf Club at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Catoosa.
The format isn't straight stroke play. Each of the 12 golfers on both the East and West teams are split into six two-man teams that play three different "games" over 18 holes. From holes 1-6, the teams play a two-man scramble. On holes 7-12, they play four-ball stroke play and on 13-18, they play alternate shot.
The pair that wins each game gets a point with a fourth point coming at the end for best total score.
MacArthur's Trent Meisel was paired with his friend from Duncan, Blake Graham, and they shot a 79, the highest score on the boys' side. They lost to Class 5A state champion Jake Johnson from Tahlequah and his partner, Brody King of Bishop Kelley.
