Coach: Thompson an LHS prototype
As a 5-5, 106-pound freshman, Mikal Thompson's future in football was hard to project.
Four years later, Thompson has grown seven inches and is now anchoring one half of the field at cornerback as Lawton High gets ready for its first title game in 1987.
Thompson is the type of player that keeps Lawton High rolling, according to his coach.
"He's a kid that we've enjoyed for four years," LHS head coach Randy Breeze said. "We've had some great players at Lawton High School, but our success has been on overachievers, people that came into the program with a real big heart. That makes a big difference and we have watched him in four years grow from a little bitty kid, and you knew he had a big heart so we weren't about to give up on him, into one of the best defensive backs in the state.
"He's exactly what we gotta have to have success: kids that will put in the time in the weight room, the classroom and have success on the practice field to make themselves a player."
When he was a freshman, Thompson wasn't about to give up playing football. He may have lacked size, but his determination never wavered.
