Cameron softball collects first-ever NCAA invite
First-year Cameron softball coach Rodney DeLong may not have had the college coaching experience when he arrived on campus, however, what the young skipper brought to the Aggie program was excitement and a desire to make sure his players worked hard but still found a way to "have fun."
And now that fun will extend further than anyone might have imagined when the season started.
Monday morning the Aggies landed the school's first berth in the NCAA Division II softball tournament, earning a spot in a four-team regional at San Angelo, Texas, on the campus of Angelo State. CU will meet St. Mary's on Friday at 4:30 p.m. and after that the schedule is determined by whether they win or lose.
Also in the field are host Angelo State and St. Edwards who will play the other first-round game on Friday at 7 p.m. Angelo State earned the right to host after upsetting No. 1-ranked West Texas in the Lone Star Conference Tournament title game on Saturday. St. Mary's claimed the Heartland Conference Tournament title to clinch its berth in the field.
If the 28-19 Aggies can upset the 42-12 Rattlers, they would play the Angelo/St. Edward's winner at 3 p.m. on Saturday. However if they lose on Friday, they would play the loser of the other game at 5:30 p.m. Saturday. The title game will be Sunday at 3 p.m. with the "if" game planned for 5:30.
