Cache loses heartbreaker to Weatherford in district finale, 3-2

CACHE — Weatherford wasn’t taking any chances.

The Eagles had a couple of outs in the bottom of the final inning when Cache leadoff hitter Hayden Nunley approached the plate. Nunley made them pay in his previous three at bats with a home run and a pair of singles. He wouldn’t get a fourth opportunity. Weatherford intentionally walked Nunley, sending freshman Keegan Fink to bat.

After reaching a full count, Fink flied out to center as the Bulldogs fell, 3-2 on Tuesday in a game for the District 4A-1 championship.

“Hunter Tate hits a screamer right at the kid (before Nunley’s at bat),” coach Michael Fisher said. “If that falls in right there, you’ve got runners at first and second and they can’t intentionally walk Hayden because there’s only one out. Hayden has hit the ball well all year. He started today at .493. He’s got on base a lot and should have more runs scored than he does. That’s what you want out of your leadoff hitter. He obviously got the recognition from (Weatherford) that he deserved. He’s going to be sorely missed next year, but we’re going to try to get what we can out of him these next two weeks regardless of what happens.”
