Board votes Edelman as Ike coach
After a confusing end to a special meeting of the Lawton Board of Education, Eisenhower High School has a new head football coach, however, it wasn't the man more than 100 Lawtonians came to the Shoemaker Center Monday night to support.
For a brief moment a large group of players and job hopeful Rod Fisher and his family thought he had gotten the job on a 5-0 vote but what they failed to hear was the name Superintendent Dr. Tom Deighan recommended to the board and that name was Danny Edelman, a long-time Texas coach who was head coach at both Wichita Falls-Hirschi and Rider during his career.
As soon as Deighan gave the board the recommendation, the roll call was made and Edelman was hired in a 5-0 vote.
That's when the confusion spoiled what had been a peaceful meeting for more than two hours while the job was hashed out in executive session. When the 60 or so Ike students heard the 5-0 vote they just took for granted that it was good news for their candidate and mobbed him in the center of the floor.
In just a minute or so other adult supporters started to wonder aloud what candidate the board had voted on and that's when tensions rose considerably as they started realizing the misunderstanding. At that point Fisher's supporters, including brother Reggie, stepped up toward the board table to voice their disapproval to board members.
