Blue Devils, Cyclones battle to see who hits 3-0
Welcome to 2-0, Walters and Snyder.
It's been a while for both of you, since 2008 to be exact. Snyder reached 3-0 that year, but hasn't replicated the mark since. Walters last saw a 3-0 start in 2001.
Something will give when the two teams meet tonight in Walters. It's a non-district game with few real implications, but three-game winning streaks have been rare lately for the Cylones and Blue Devils.
"Right now, it's just for our program. We're excited," Walters coach Faron Griffin said of the start. "We know each week the competition will get stiffer. It has no implication for what we do for the playoffs. It's fun, but we're trying to keep things in perspective as well."
Consider that Walters came into the season having won four games the past five years, which included winless seasons in 2010 and '11.
"It's unbelievable starting out this good," said senior receiver Bryce Willis, who scored three touchdowns and rushed for 140 yards last week against Empire. "Having previous seasons like that, if we were starting 0-2 people would be saying, 'Oh, here comes another bad season.' But this is really a major confidence boost for us. We just need to keep the intensity going."
Willis said part of the turnaround has been offseason focus. Walters didn't start testing players' 40-yard dashes until two years ago, when Griffin arrived at the school after working as an assistant at MacArthur.
"We were all rough then. We had never even done them before," Willis said. "Now we've got many, many people running quick 40s. We just gradually got better and better."
Snyder's situation is similar. The Cyclones' numbers last year were so low they forfeited a district game against Thomas. Players had to pull together to avoid doing so for other games.
