Altus gets big district win in Del City
This is a no-brainer. The game of the week in the state goes to Enid for pulling off one of the most epic comebacks in state history as the Plainsmen defeated Putnam City West 49-42 in double overtime after miraculously erasing a 42-7 deficit with only 10:20 left in regulation.
But runner-up for game of the week goes to an area team the Altus Bulldogs for pulling off an epic win of their own by edging Del City, 24-21, on the road Friday night.
Altus running back Cabe Dickerson scored a 5-yard touchdown run with 4:26 left to tie it at 21, capping off a 15-play drive. Then senior kicker Ernesto Rosas kicked the game-winning 20-yard field goal with seven seconds left.
"For us to win that game with the mistakes we made was a huge credit to the kids and their effort, grit and 'never say die' attitude," Altus head coach Todd Vargas said. "The kids played extremely hard, they never gave up or blamed each other. They never collapsed mentally."
Snagging a come-from-behind win was all due to the three core building blocks of the program, Vargas said: servant leadership, belief and positive energy.
"It's what our culture is here. We used all of them," Vargas said. "They were all characteristics of who we were Friday.
"We just had to overcome a lot. I was so proud of the kids. I told 'em I was more proud of them than any other team I've been a part of because they would not quit and give in."
