Aggies earn first home sweep since 2011
The teachings of Coach Qi Wang were evident Friday as his Cameron University Aggies put together a solid effort and rolled to a 3-0 Lone Star Conference volleyball victory over Texas A&M-Kingsville before a raucous crowd in the CU gym.
Scores were 25-21, 25-20 and 25-16.
It's the first home sweep for Cameron since the Ags defeated Eastern New Mexico on Oct. 25, 2011.
Kat Evans and Christina Viera recorded double-doubles as Cameron improved to 7-7 overall and to 2-5 in league play. Kingsville is 10-5 and 3-4.
The Aggies return to their court tonight to face Arkansas-Monticello. Match time will be 6 p.m.
Friday's win was built around a 43-28 margin in kills and a 63-53 edge in digs. Cameron was guilty of 29 errors; Kingsville 33.
Evans, a junior from Pearland, Texas, had 12 kills and 10 digs to pace the balanced CU attack. Viera, a freshman from Montevideo, Uruguay, added 10 kills and 11 digs.
Senior Rebecca Green also had 10 kills and sophomore Paige Holt added eight and a solo block. Freshman libero Lindsey McCauley chipped in with 16 digs.
"It was a good match," said Wang, who is serving his first season as the Aggie coach.
He also saluted the student body for giving his squad a boost.
"The crowd was good," he said. "They moved them up."
Krystal Faison paced Kingsville with nine kills and 13 digs while Ashley Bukowski had eight kills and four block assists.
