580 RollerGirls drop season-opening bout
Lawton's 580 RollerGirls kicked off the 2018 season with a Super Bowl night bout in Norman to take on the Oklahoma Victory Doll's Battle Squad.
With a lot of new wheels on the track, 580 fought hard but fell 257-107.
Two new skaters donned 580 uniforms to make up the 11 skater roster: Brittannie Bowsher ("Brittannie Smears") and Sarah "Sparky" Pineau. The two joined the only remaining original RollerGirl, Alicia Vernor, who goes by "Kurvacious Pride".
"I'm excited," Pineau said before the bout. "Ready to make my team proud."
Bowsher had her mind in focus for the bout ahead.
"I'm just hoping I remember everything that I've been working on and muscle memory takes over and I just go on autopilot and I just know what I'm doing," said Bowsher.
580 eased into a defensive rhythm against Battle Squad's effective sweeping methods, said Marie "Molly Meet Your Maker" Berberea, one of the team's veteran leaders and jammers. Berberea is out for the season as she readies for a new baby.
Her husband and the team's former coach, Matt Berberea, has returned to the sidelines as an assistant coach. Mary Berberea also serves as an effective eye to assist in coaching. She graded the team's jammers.
