Altus center covers wide swath of W. Okla.
The Cancer Centers of Southwest Oklahoma location in Altus is seeking volunteers to assist staff and patients undergoing treatment at that location.
"We need help with transportation to pick up chemotherapy drugs from the pharmacy," said Tori Hazel, RN-nurse manager. "We also need transportation to bring patients from their homes to the center and then back home."
Hazel said the center also needs volunteers to answer telephone calls, to sit with patients who come to the center alone and talk with them as they are receiving their treatments.
"We'll accept volunteers who can work half a day or a full day," she said. "And we'll try to work with volunteers based on their scheduling needs."
Hazel said the Cancers Center of Southwest Oklahoma's Altus location serves patients over a large area of Southwest and West Central Oklahoma into North Texas from Clinton and Elk City south across the Red River to Vernon and Childress, Texas; and from Hollis and Vinson east to Hobart, Snyder and Frederick. The center has been in operation since 2008 and includes a staff of 11 employees. Medical oncologists include Dr. Manal Robin and Dr. Albert Wood, and Dr. Leann Smith is the center's radiation oncologist.
