Heart Health Awareness event set
The Third Annual Soul to Sole Heart Health Awareness event is set to begin at 9 a.m. Saturday in Bethlehem Baptist Church Family Life Center, 602 NW Arlington.
Sponsored by the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc., Theta Upsilon Omega Chapter, the event is in partnership with DeMarsha Williams, Zumba instructor and educator, and hosted by the church.
Participants can take their friends and family to the free event. All participants are encouraged to dress in red in celebration of National Heart Month in February. Take a water bottle and face towel for the motivational dance workout.
Cardiovascular diseases are at an all-time high in the nation, according to Ashley Green, co-chair of health promotions for Theta Upsilon Omega Chapter.
"Getting at least 30 minutes a day of moderate to vigorous movement is recommended for adults, and 60 minutes for youth," Green said. "Participating in Zumba dance fitness is an easy and fun way for everyone to get their daily physical activity."
Facts about heart disease from the Center for Disease Control and Prevention:
Heart disease is the leading cause of death for both men and women. More than half the deaths due to heart disease in 2015 were men.
