Walters chamber gives awards out at banquet
WALTERS Janell Philpott was recognized as Citizen Emeritus at the Walters Chamber of Commerce's recent annual banquet.
John Sheppard, city manager and 2013 chamber vice president, explained the award recognizes a person who has consistently made valuable contributions to the community over a period of years.
"The person selected this year has done exactly that beginning with her high school years," he said.
Sheppard then recounted how in high school Philpott participated in many activities, which continued when she became a high school teacher. She was active as pep club sponsor and the writing and editing of the school newspaper and yearbook, he said, and she has recently worked to locate as many yearbooks as possible from previous years to be digitally copied. "As sponsor of the school newspaper, she kept on file each edition and has now made these available in the same manner," he said.
Another one of her favorite crusades was a children's playground, for which she planned fundraisers and found participants to help see the project completed; she continues to encourage its maintenance.
