Heritage Hall rides big start to win at Elgin
ELGIN - Heritage Hall raced to a 28-0 first half lead then held off Elgin's efforts to come back as the Chargers topped the Owls, 35-13 in a District 4A-1 contest at Owl Stadium Friday night.
Heritage Hall (7-0, 4-0) started quickly, scoring the first four times it had the ball and it appeared that they could score at will. Elgin's defense had other ideas, however as the Owls stiffened to hold the Chargers to one more touchdown the last two and a half quarters.
Heritage took the opening kickoff, mixing the run and pass successfully to move 70 yards in 11 plays. A pass from Blake Adams to Chandler Shapard gave the Chargers a first-and-goal at the Elgin one. Three plays later, Dawson Evans scored on a blast over right guard. Callahan Walker booted the conversion to make it 7-0 with 7:15 left in the first quarter.
Heritage Hall started it next possession at the Owl 38 after Pepper Ferrell was stopped short on a fake punt attempt. The Chargers decided to go to the air on this series. Adams threw two incompletions sandwiched around a one-yard keeper. On fourth-and-nine Adams launched a pass toward Santana Randle down the left side. Randle made a remarkable leaping catch in the end zone just before falling out of bounds. Walker's kick upped the lead to 14-0 with 4:06 left in the first period.
The Owls were unable to move again and after a Taiese punt and an 11-yard return by Billy Ross, Heritage took over on the Elgin 43.
