'Darko, Elgin hoops squads win tournament championships
Seven area teams were playing in tournament championship games Saturday night and five of them —Cache boys, the Anadarko girls and boys and the Elgin girls and boys — wound up victorious with some hardware in hand.
Three wins in three days has become as routine as breathing for the No. 2 Elgin girls, who improved to 15-1 with a 62-32 thrashing over No. 16 Elk City in the Hub City Classic championship game.
“They were excited and walked into the locker room saying, ‘That’s two in a row, coach!’ They treat this as a reward but not as ultimate goal,” Elgin coach Jerrod Jones said. “Their eye is on the prize.”
It’s the second straight Hub City Classic title for the Lady Owls, who sank 13 3-pointers and defended their title behind a balanced attack with four seniors scoring in double figures. Paige Pendley led the charge with four triples and 16 points while Izzy Cummins drained five treys and scored 15 points. Kailah Ballou chipped in 13 points while Gabby Cummins (10 points) and Cassandra Colong (8 points) each sank a pair of 3-pointers.
