Shelby Elizabeth Mata was selected as the Comanche Indian Veterans Association (CIVA) Princess for 2013-15 during the organization's monthly meeting last week.
Her coronation will be May 18 during the organization's annual Armed Forces Day Banquet at the Comanche Community Center in Apache.
Mata is the daughter of Antonio and Phillis Mata. Her grandparents are the late Mitchell and Lou Bell Ototivo Gwoompi, and her great-grandparents are the late Vilas and Angeline "Gommock" Peacoose Ototivo. Her great-grandmother passed her Comanche name "Gommock," meaning "Loving Person," to Mata.
She served as the Comanche Nation Junior Princess from 2008-10 and is a sophomore at Walters High School. She is a member of the Native American Club, high school basketball team, varsity choir and A-B Honor Roll.
