Jeri Mosiman, Executive Director of the Lawton Food Bank, is asking members of the community to tour one of the 19 United Way Agencies in the area if they have any doubts whether or not they contribute to the United Way's current campaign with a goal of reaching $1.825 million. The United Way is in place to provide financial assistance to selected, local non-profit organizations such as the Lawton Food Bank.
The Lawton Food Bank received about $80,000 from the United Way for this past year's operating budget. Mosiman said that United Way is the source of their largest, individual donation and is credited for providing about half of their operating budget.
"Our building is paid for but we still have salaries to meet, utility bills to pay, food to buy and insurance just like everyone else," she said.
To Mosiman though, the United Way provides the Lawton Food Bank and other agencies with more than just funding.
"We feel very fortunate to be a United Way agency," she said. "I also think that being a United Way agency gives us credibility."
Agencies that receive funds from United Way are required to apply for funding each year with no guarantee that funding will be received.
