Kate Fox, played by Dakota Johnson, is the American that "had to grow up to quickly" due to the birth of her now 5-year-old daughter Maddie (Maggie Elizabeth Jones) in contrast to her free-spirited brother Ben Fox (Nat Faxon).
The contrasting characteristics of these two people trying to coexist together in "Ben and Kate," Fox's new Tuesday night comedy, was designed to bring interesting and comical dynamics to the TV show. It instead brought nothing. From the pilot episode, the show was not funny enough to be classified as a comedy but not heartwarming or intense enough to be a drama. It is just average.
The show will attempt to have a romantic element with the love interests and intimate life of Kate paraded before us on the screen. Just as you would expect from a TV show portraying a young girl that got pregnant at an early age without a father to help raise the child, Kate's romantic life has been rather dull. I am sure that Fox will help her out with that though.
