"Kill him."
It is not your typical greeting card note to send with flowers but to Dr. Grace Devlin (Jordana Spiro), it was not altogether unexpected. When you are paying off a mob boss to keep your brother alive, that is the life you should expect. It is also the premise for Fox's new Monday night series "The Mob Doctor."
There was nothing but drama in the series opener on Monday night. When a show starts off with a doctor ripping a screwdriver out of a mobster's head in an animal hospital while she is on break from her real job as a surgeon at a popular hospital in Chicago, the viewer should know that they are in for an interesting, most likely far-fetched idea for a story.
"This will hurt you more than it does me," Devlin tells the mobster.
And that it does. This show was painful to watch. Within the first episode alone, Devlin deals with the accidental death of a patient, a 14-year-old pregnant friend and having to kill someone in order to keep a mob boss off her back. However, she is also a superhero to as at one point in the show, she must immediately leave the hospital in the middle of her shift to protect her mom and brother from being murdered. Forgive me if I feel the plot is somewhat inconceivable.
