It's been some time since Cameron fans have been able to say this, but the Lone Star Conference lead will be up for grabs tonight when the Aggies host arch-rival Midwestern, which just happens to be leading the league.
The men will tangle around 8 p.m. in the Aggie Gym, or about 30 minutes after the women end their game, which also features a good deal at stake.
But the men's game will not only draw the attention of what is expected to be the largest crowd of the season, it will be in the spotlight of the remainder of the league teams, all of them counting on the Aggies to tighten the league standings.
MSU comes in at 7-1, while Incarnate Word is 6-2, followed by Cameron and Texas A&M-Kingsville at 5-3. If the Aggies can pull the upset ICU and MSU will be tied for the league lead and that will aid all those trying to catch the Mustangs including the Aggies. West Texas is 4-4, Tarleton and Eastern New Mexico are 3-5 and Abilene Christian and Angelo State at 2-6 and all those teams would benefit from a CU victory.
Cameron, though, may be a bit rusty after not playing for 11 days while the women had their first meeting of the season against Texas Woman's University which obviously doesn't have a men's team. However, MSU faced the same issue because the Mustang women were also playing TWU last weekend, so they haven't played in 11 days as well.
"The key may just be which team handles that long layoff the best," CU men's coach Wade Alexander said. "We tried to keep our guys going at a good pace, but you never know about those things. We also have a couple banged up and a couple sick, but we're eager to see where we stand."
The Mustangs use balance to beat people with four players averaging double figures starting with Corbin Thomas, who is averaging 13.7 points per game and 8.6 rebounds. Keith Spellman and Monzaigo Williams are averaging around 12 points per game.
MSU leads the league in offensive rebounds with 16.7 per game and those second-chance points have been a big key in their success.
"They are just crushing people on the boards and when I say crushing, I mean literally crushing them," Alexander said. "They have really big, strong guards and a couple of 6-9 guys inside and they just wear you down.
