When your brother gets recruited by big Division I football programs, sometimes there is a huge shadow to fill.
That's not the case for MacArthur's Davy'Aun Thomas.
The younger brother of Mike Thomas, who graduated last year and is now playing at Tulsa, Davy'Aun (just D to everyone) has stepped into the same position and has not missed a beat.
"My brother was a great player, great athlete too, but for me I think my coverage is better than his, " Thomas said with a laugh."I think he is still a great athlete, but my coverage is better."
What he does a lot better than his brother is fielding punts, which has made him indispensable to the Highlanders.
"Just catching the ball is so important. If you don't catch the ball, that's another 15 yards because the ball is going to roll that way. The job he is doing is really, really good," Mac head coach Brett Manning said. "It gave us a touchdown on Friday night. Even though the offense punched it in I consider it a special teams touchdown. We only have one returner back there because we like to pressure the punter, and he's doing a great job of running sideline to sideline and catching the ball. He's been our best guy in the last several years at fielding the ball."
