Third-quarter explosion fuels Duncan, 45-10
DUNCAN Duncan's Demons broke open a competitive game in the second half of a District 5A-1 contest with Altus at Halliburton Stadium Friday night to win going away, 45-10.
Duncan scored two third quarter touchdowns to increase a 21-10 halftime lead to 35-10 before adding more points in the final period.
"We knew Altus would have momentum after they won last week," said Duncan coach Jim Holloway. "But our kids were ready and we played very well."
The Demons began the game as if it would be no contest all the way. After Bulldog quarterback Brantley Ford kept around the right side for 11 yards on the game's first play, Duncan's defense held Altus to three yards on the next three plays. Michael Perez's 35-yard punt gave the Demons a first down at their own 31. Stacee Morrison gained four yards on first down. Altus jumped offside to give Duncan a second-and-one at the 40. On that play, scatback Je'Mario McCoy swept left end for 21 yards to the Bulldog 39. Three plays later, on a second-and-four from the 23, Cody Merrill broke over right guard and cut sharply back to his left to outrace all Altus defenders to the end zone. Jack Braught kicked the conversion to give the Demons a 7-0 lead.
They added to that lead later in the first quarter when McCoy went off left tackle and cut to the sideline on his way to a 37-yard touchdown. Braught again toed the extra point to make it 14-0 with 3:10 still left in the period.
Most of the second quarter was dominated by Altus as the Bulldogs tried to make a game of it.
